VizForge vs Zebra BI
An honest 2026 comparison. Includes the dimensions where Zebra BI is the better choice.
Zebra BI builds Power BI visuals that implement IBCS (International Business Communication Standards) — a rigorous visual-language specification for business reports developed by Rolf Hichert. Their tables and charts enforce IBCS-style delta bars, variance notation, and scenario comparison out of the box. For finance teams committed to IBCS, Zebra BI is the default answer.
Pricing is per-user, starting around $6.80/user/month and scaling with team size. Zebra BI's strength is standardization: every chart your team makes will look and read the same way across the organization.
VizForge takes a different approach. Instead of shipping a standardized suite, VizForge generates a custom .pbiviz file per prompt. If your team needs IBCS, Zebra BI is the safer bet — we can generate IBCS-styled charts on request, but we don't enforce the standard or provide ongoing IBCS guidance.
If your team needs visuals that aren't in Zebra BI's catalog (Sankey, chord, violin plot, custom dashboards that don't fit their format), or if you want to avoid per-seat licensing, VizForge fills the gap.
Zebra BI pricing model
Per-user subscription. Pro plan ~$6.80/user/month; Enterprise tiers higher. Annual commits common.
Side-by-side comparison
| Dimension | Zebra BI | VizForge |
|---|---|---|
| Design philosophy | IBCS-standardized (one right way to show variance) | Custom per prompt (whatever you describe) |
| Pricing model | Per-user subscription | Per-generation credits |
| Visual breadth | Tables + charts within IBCS canon | Any visual type via AI generation |
| Source code | Closed | Full TypeScript + capabilities.json + settings.ts included |
| Learning curve | Low (standardized conventions, minimal options) | Minimal (describe in plain English) |
| Consistency across team | Very high — IBCS enforced | Depends on how consistently you prompt |
| Deprecation risk | If license lapses, visuals stop working | Zero — generated .pbiviz runs forever |
When Zebra BI is the better choice
- Your company has formally adopted IBCS for business communication.
- You want every variance chart, scenario table, and performance overview to look identical team-wide without enforcement.
- You prefer an opinionated standard to design decisions in every report.
When VizForge is the better choice
- You need visuals outside the IBCS canon (network graphs, Sankeys, custom industry layouts).
- You want to own the TypeScript source and modify freely.
- Your team is too small or budget-constrained for per-seat licensing.
- You're working on one-off dashboards for clients where each has unique style requirements.
Can you use both?
Use both. Keep Zebra BI for IBCS-governed finance reports; use VizForge for custom dashboards or visual types Zebra BI doesn't cover. They install as separate Power BI custom visuals and don't conflict.
3 visuals per month on the free plan. No credit card required.
FAQ
Can VizForge generate IBCS-compliant charts?
Partially. Prompt VizForge with 'IBCS-style variance table with plan/actual/forecast columns and delta bars' and you'll get close to IBCS. But Zebra BI has years of IBCS-specific engineering we can't fully replicate in a generation.
Is Zebra BI cheaper than VizForge?
Below ~5 users, Zebra BI wins on cost per chart created. Above that, VizForge's flat subscription scales better per-user, especially if you generate many unique visuals.
Will Zebra BI visuals and VizForge visuals render correctly in the same report?
Yes. Both are standard Power BI custom visuals that install via the .pbiviz package format; they coexist without issue.
